Drábovna rocks
Drábovna is a well developed if small ‘rock city’, located to the southwest of the Malá Skála town. The hard quartz sandstone layer is less thick than some other rock cities, and the pillars and blocks reach a maximum height of 20m, but are still impressive. The sandstone is unusual in that it has layers with higher proportion of silica cement than some of the other sandstone areas. This has made the sandstone less porous and as a result small pools exist in the sandstone relief. The selective hardening of certain layers in the sandstone has also led to the creation of some fine examples of ‘mushroom rocks’ (where the softer sandstone layer beneath a hardened top layer has been eroded more quickly, leaving a classical ‘mushroom’ shape).
