Vyskeř

Chapel of svaté Anny, on Vyskeř hill

Vyskeř is an ancient volcano, 463m in height, located in the southern section of Český ráj. Vyskeř is visible from some distance away due to the white chapel of St Anne, which is perched on top of a hard basalt outcrop. The chapel was originally built in the 17th century and reconstructed in the 19th century. The erosion resistant outcrop was created by a volcanic eruption some 16 to 20 million years ago. This was a time of significant volcanic and seismic disturbance in the region, due to the impact of the African plate grinding on the European plate (which led to the formation of the Alps). The basalt rock (which is cooled lava) is unusual as it contains chromite ore (which is rich in the valuable metal chromium) . Vyskeř is the only location in the Český ráj where chromite has been found. For more information on the chapel, see here.
