The Kozákov volcanic hill is the highest point in the Český ráj region at 744m high. The area has benefited from its proximity to the Lusatian fault for several periods of volcanic activity, up until around 4 million years ago, and its lava strewn slopes still bear testimony to its violent past. The 360 degree view from the top is extraordinary, and on a clear day it is believed one quarter of Bohemia is visible.

Kozákov is also famous for its semi precious stones, including agates and amethysts formed during its volcanic past. The first settlers in the area – perhaps 9000 years ago – came hunting for these stones, and the site has been treasured in the millennia since then.
