Rotštejn

Rotštejn is a classic ruined rock castle built on the edge of the Klokočí cliffs. It was founded by the Markvart family in the second half of the 13th century, by which time the family had acquired and claimed much of the territory of the Jizera river basin. Vok (son of Jaroslav, who founded the town of Turnov) became the first lord of Rotštejn.

The Rotštejn family had died out by the early 15th century, and the castle was possibly partly destroyed during Hussite wars in the 1420’s. It was likely never fully occupied again, and by the early 16th century was reported to be in ruins.

The castle was mostly wooden and it was partially carved into the cliffs. Rotštejn is one of the better preserved rock castles and is easily accessed by a short walk from the Klokočí village below the cliffs.
