Vranov (Pantheon)

cellar room outside the main gate of Vranov

Vranov is a rock castle perched high above the Jizera river, near the town of Malá Skála. It was built in the early 15th century on the hardened and uplifted sandstone ridge that lies along the Lusatian fault zone. The castle was abandoned later that century. The site is also known as the Pantheon after its 19th century owner, Römisch, built a neo- gothic summer palace in the castle ruins, and adapted the site to place small memorials to significant historical figures. The site is open for visits from the Spring onwards. See the Vranov web site for information.
