Vranovský Hřeben (Vranov ridge)

Viewpoint at the Vranov ridge

The Vranov ridge is an extraordinary geological feature, situated in the town of Malá Skála. It is an uplifted block of sandstone dating from the earliest stages of the formation of the sandstone layers of Český ráj, some 90 million years ago.

The ridge is situated directly on the important fault line, the Lusatian fault. Tectonic forces associated with the creation of the Alps caused the lowest layer of sandstone, formed after the Cretaceous sea had retreated, to be forced to the surface and bent perpendicularly. The massive forces involved caused a hardening of the rock, resulting in a rock ridge that is highly resistant to erosion. The same forces created the nearby Suché skály.

It is possible to walk the length of the ridge, starting in Malá Skála, passing the castle of Vranov (Pantheon) and finishing at the castle of Frýdštejn.
