Valečov castle

Valečov is an imposing medieval castle ruin built on a sandstone outcrop, close the village of Boseň. It is one of the more accessible rock castles, with a parking area just below the ruins. The tower and some rock rooms may be visited when the castle is open during the spring-summer season. The rock rooms around the castle and in the sandstone block above the castle are some of the most extensive in the region.

The castle originates from the early 14th century, when it was constructed by the dominant Markvart-Vartenberk family. This family owned much of the territory of the middle and upper Jizera valley throughout the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle had multiple owners in the subsequent two centuries, including Albrecht of Valdštejn, who added the estate to his collection of territory in northern Bohemia during the 30 Years War. After this war, the castle fell into ruin, and was used extensively for local building materials.
