Mužský viewpoint

Mužský hill is located within the Příhrazské sandstone plateau and is the highest point in Mlada Boleslav region at 463m. It is an outcrop of basalt, that dates from an intrusion of hot magma into the sandstone layers that occurred between 15 and 20 million years ago. This was a period of high seismic activity in the whole region (and coincides with the creation of the Alps).

On the hill top is a monument to the fallen in the Austria/Prussian war of 1866, much of which was fought in Bohemia, including an important battle near Jičín. The war severely reduced the Austria-Hungarian Empire’s influence and standing in Europe.

The 360 degree view is exceptional. It is said that 1/6th of Bohemia is visible from the top. Just below the hill is the attractive heritage village of Mužský with its fine examples of timbered folk architecture.

The sandstone plateau area around Mužský has been settled since Neolithic times, and it is probably the most important archaeological area in the region.
