Drábské světničky

Drábské světničky is an intriguing ruined rock castle built in the 14th century, probably by the Markvart-Vartenberk family to protect their interests in the Jizera valley. It was constructed high on the rugged Příhrazské skály sandstone cliffs, with views of the surrounding Jizera plain and the nearby town of Mnichov Hradiště. The castle covers a group of seven sandstone rocks, connected with wooden bridges. It fell into disuse after the Hussite wars of the early 15th century, although it may have provided shelter to fugitives during the Thirty Years War in the early 17th century.

It is possible the site was also connected to the nearby and much older Hrada/Klamorna fortifications which were extensively occupied from the Stone Ages onwards, but there is no significant archeological evidence for major constructions prior to the Middle Ages. The site, however, makes an excellent lookout point giving a wide arc view of the valley below. It seems likely there was at least a lookout point constructed here in the earliest times of occupation of the plateau, some 7000 years ago.
