Semín is an intriguing Celtic (La Tène period) archaeological site, located on a plateau above the Podtrosecká and Věžické valleys. This large flat area measures some 180ha and is almost completely ringed by sandstone cliffs.

Celtic fortifications have been found protecting the access points to the plateau. However, no significant grave goods have been discovered, and it seems unlikely it was occupied permanently as a settlement for any length of time. Possible theories include that it may have been a site that was planned as a settlement, but never finished. Alternatively, the site may have been used as a temporary gathering point for a large force or migrating tribe, or it might possibly have been used or planned as a sacred/ritual site. Certainly its location is spectacular, with views towards the two basalt towers of Trosky. Hopefully, future archaeological research will reveal more…

Today, however, in the middle of the plateau, a somewhat stylized imitation of a Celtic fortress has been recently constructed as a commercial space by a nearby residential resort/pension. The fortress might lack historical accuracy – it certainly has its detractors as well as supporters – but one cannot deny it makes an impression!
